Description

Mississippi and Tennessee are before the U.S. Supreme Court arguing over groundwater pumping by TN from the Memphis Sand aquifer which underlies each state. Mississippi argues that Memphis Light, Gas and Water (MLGW), the utility of the City of Memphis, has been pumping this water and seeks over $600M in damages. MLGW contends it has a right to the water as it has not been allocated. This case, the first GW-only case to reach the Court, has important ramifications that go far beyond MS and TN. In addition, a new group - Protect Our Aquifer - seeks to do just that, in light of the proposed Byhalia pipeline. Stay tuned!
