The evolving regulatory landscape of Per and polyfluorinated Alkyl Substances (PFAS) has resulted in individual states establishing screening values or promulgated drinking water values that are lower or more inclusive than the current US EPA.
As PFAS are not removed through conventional water or wastewater treatment, management of PFAS in raw water, wastewater effluent, and biosolids streams is a growing concern for utilities. Treatment technologies that are demonstrated as the most reliable and effective approaches dominantly revolve around sorption, either using granular activated carbon (GAC) or anion exchange (AEX) resins, although novel absorbents are emerging.
This presentation will include an overview of PFAS, a survey of current regulatory guidance for PFAS, and discussion of PFAS removal methods. Examples of pilot and full-scale treatment installations will be presented.
